On March 22, the inaugural Huayou Beijing-Tongxiang Alumni Innovation Fund Awards Ceremony was held in Beijing, co-hosted by the Beijing Jiaxing Chamber of Commerce and the Beijing Branch of Tongxiang Senior High School Alumni Association. The event brought together government officials, industry leaders, and alumni to celebrate outstanding innovative achievements, strengthen hometown ties, and discuss collaborative development .
President Xi Jinping has emphasized that “global competitiveness ultimately hinges on talent,” positioning talent development as a national priority. Against the backdrop of technological revolution and geopolitical shifts, fostering high-skilled talent has become critical to China’s progress .
Zhang Jianhong, Assistant President of Huayou Cobalt, delivered a speech highlighting the company’s invest philosophy: “Wherever we invest, we must contribute to the local economy and society.” This principle underpins Huayou’s ESG strategy, which includes extensive support for education. In 2023, Huayou donated 1 million yuan to establish the fund through the Tongxiang Charity Federation, aiming to fuel technological innovation and build Tongxiang into an upgraded “industrial powerhouse” .
In 2024, the fund’s first selection attracted applications from top-tier universities, including Tsinghua University and Peking University. Fourteen alumni were honored for their innovative projects. Zhang urged recipients to “scale new heights in science and contribute to their hometown and nation” .
Awardees such as Zhou Houhua (Peking University) and Xia Zhenxiao (China Agricultural University) presented their projects. Professor Tu Xinquan, Dean of the China WTO Institute at the University of International Business and Economics, delivered a keynote speech on “Global Trends: Opportunities and Challenges for Chinese Enterprises Overseas,” offering strategic insights for innovation .
The fund exemplifies Huayou’s ESG-driven mission to “serve the nation through industry” and cultivate talent. By bridging alumni networks and industrial goals, Huayou aims to advance Tongxiang’s economic, cultural, and human capital development .
